Hi! I'm Mary Ellen. I live in Oneonta with my simply amazing husband, "J," and my feisty, funny and inspiring children Jamie and Beckett.
I grew up in Alfred, NY, so I'm a small town girl. I went to Ithaca College where I studied Biochemistry and Exercise Science. I was also a softball player (center fielder) for the Bombers.
After graduating from Ithaca in 1997, I went to SUNY Upstate Medical University where I earned my medical degree. It was also in Syracuse where I met the love of my life, "J," while playing Ultimate Frisbee. While at Syracuse, I participated in the Rural Medical Education (RMED) program where I had the honor of living and working here in Oneonta for 9 months while working at Oneonta Family Practice. While doing this program I was able to get a very good sense of this community along with other specialists in the area. This would factor in greatly in our decision to move back here.
"J" ended up getting a job in Manhattan, so we headed down near the city. I'm not a city girl, so I did my residency at Somerset Family Practice Residency at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, NJ. I graduated in 2004. After residency, I worked at Towne Centre Family Practice in Hillsborough, NJ for seven years. It was a very hard decision to leave such wonderful people there, but we were ready to come back up to Upstate NY...to Oneonta.
I worked at Oneonta Family Practice from 2010-2015 and have enjoyed my new adventure with Hoffman Family Medicine since 2016!!
Since 2016, I’ve been learning more about a path of medicine called Functional Medicine. The goal of this type of medicine is to understand underlying/root causes of dysfunction/disease. The nerd in me has found this area of study immensely satisfying.
That's me in a nutshell. (No! This is me in a nutshell!)
Jennie Buffington, LPN
I am so excited to have Jennie as our nurse and Functional Medicine Health Coach!! She is such a compassionate human being. We are all lucky to have her in our lives.
Farah Jimeñez, Medical Office Assistant (MOA)
We are so very fortunate to have this amazing human being working with us. Rest assured that if you call and get Farah, you will be heard and cared for!!
Kelly Martin, DCN, RDN, CDN
Hello everyone! I am Dr. Kelly Martin DCN RDN CDN, and I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with eight years of experience in a variety of patient care settings. I was lucky enough to complete a residency with Dr. Hoffman during my doctorate program and now I am grateful to be working with her to serve you in her functional medicine practice. To give you a bit of background about me, I graduated from SUNY Oneonta with an MS-Nutrition degree in 2014, and from Rutgers University with a Doctorate in Clinical Nutrition in August 2021. I have worked at SUNY Oneonta in the Nutrition and Dietetics program for 8 years as an Assistant Professor and the Assistant Director of the program. Personally, I am a lifelong resident of Otsego County, and own a small cattle farm. I love food (cooking and eating) and believe it truly is medicine. In visits with me you can expect a patient-centered, individualized approach to helping you make lifestyle changes. At our first visit, I will complete a full nutritional assessment and then will work to help you understand how food impacts your body and how we can work together on a plan that incorporates healthy food behaviors within your current budget. I will be available to you for in-person, telehealth, telephone, or virtual visits. I look forward to working with you!
Chelsea Leahy, PT, DPT, C-PS
Hello all! My name is Dr. Chelsea Leahy, PT, DPT, C-PS, and I am a licensed physical therapist with 3 years of experience in outpatient orthopedics and performance therapy. I grew up in the suburbs of Rochester, NY and attended Roberts Wesleyan College for my undergraduate studies in Biology and Psychology. I then moved to Syracuse to pursue my Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Upstate Medical University. Currently, I am the practice owner of Leahy Physical Therapy here in Oneonta and teach in the Sport and Exercise Science program at SUNY Oneonta. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my husband, John, and exercising in a variety of ways including hiking, playing pickleball, weightlifting, running, and interval training. I am excited to be joining the team at Dr. Hoffman’s practice as I truly believe in a team approach to healthcare. I believe in a proactive approach to develop optimal wellness opposed to reacting to problems as they arise. Through Dr. Hoffman’s functional medicine practice, you will receive this type of proactive care. My assessments will consist of functional performance measurements (strength, mobility, and balance) and a musculoskeletal exam. Using the results of the assessment, I will interpret your scores and will work with you to develop a fitness plan to meet your personal physical activity goals. In working with you and this team, my desire is that you will be empowered to achieve optimal wellness and ultimately get back to feeling your best and living a life you enjoy.
